A testament to how far I have come as a writer, I wrote this piece in 2019 while studying for my bachelor’s. A Twist of Fate, a short script written as part of a story and structure unit in my first year at university, explores different forms of writing, including short story, flash fiction, script, and poetry, and was easily one of my favourite pieces to write.
Inspired by modern superhero movies, shows, and tropes, I wanted to take a stab at a genre I’d long followed, and with The Boys TV show recently announced, much of my inspiration stemmed from that in particular.

This was written in my first year of university, and my process at the time was instinctive. Sit down; write what feels right; follow the tension. That instinct is still something I trust, but looking back at this piece I can see how much my prep process has grown since. Where I’d now bring research, worldbuilding notes, and structural planning even to a short piece, A Twist of Fate was built entirely on feel and a clear central idea. Occasionally that’s exactly the right approach.
We were assigned to write a cold open for a TV show, and since The Boys had just been announced, I aimed to put my own twist on the hero vs villain trope, particularly the notion that neither side has a monopoly on believing they’re doing good. From this, and from characters such as Loki (Marvel) and Billy Butcher (The Boys), the character of “Limerick” was born, and the story flowed from there.
The challenge was to create genuine tension and a fully realised setting within a short scene, making readers and potential viewers want to keep watching. All within the constraints of a form I was still learning.
